Airbag recalls: Order of priority
Parts allocated to registered vehicles first
With the mandatory recall now in effect, the manufacturers’ distributors are under intensive pressure to fulfil a large number of alpha-type recalls.
We understand that many distributors will have their own order of priority for fulfilling these.
Generally speaking, the order of priority for distributors is as follows:
- Vehicles that were sold NZ-new
Distributors will already have procured the replacement inflators for these vehicles, sent letters to individual owners, and allocated the individual inflatorsfor these vehicles. - Used imports that are now registered and in NZ’s fleet
Inflators will be allocated to individual vehicles, if the distributor has either procured replacement parts for these vehicles or is in the process of doing so.
Owners will be notified when replacement parts are available.
- Unregistered or uncomplied vehicles
These are currently lowest priority, as the distributors have no way of knowing which vehicles are coming into the country, and therefore cannot allocate parts.
We continue to work closely with the MIA to develop a process for reworking used imports.
Get them fixed before you import
It is critically important that ALL recalls are actioned in their country of origin (before de-registration), and closed out by the manufacturer before shipping.
