Happy New Year !
Many of you will now be returning to “business as usual” after the holiday break…We hope you all had some quality time with the family and friends (and even sold a few cars!)
We have recently had a few questions re the next phase of the ‘ESC Rule’ that will come into effect shortly, so to summarise, this is what you need to know:
- Phase 2 of the ESC requirements for used imported vehicles comes into effect March 1st 2018 in that all passenger vehicles class MA (that’s ‘cars’) with an engine of 2001 or more cc’s will need to have ESC (Electronic Stability Control) fitted.
- Any ‘cars’ you intend importing that has an engine bigger than 2000 cc’s and does not have ESC fitted needs to be NZTA border checked before March 1st 2018. Please ensure you keep this in mind when purchasing to ensure vehicles will make the cut off in time.
- Each manufacturer has its own ‘terminology’ for ESC. Please discuss this with your agent as simply asking about ‘ESC’ may get lost/overlooked in translation. We also understand that ‘ESC’ is not recorded on Japanese Auction Sheets,
so please check with your agent if you are unsure. - This change DOES NOT apply to vehicles 20 years of age or older.
- Please assume there will be NO EXEMPTIONS issued by NZTA for any purchasing ‘cock ups’ or late arrivals (they have heard all the excuses before – TRUST ME).
We understand that the IMVIA ( now ‘VIA’) will have more detailed information as to the makes and models of vehicles that do/do not comply/need physically checking re ESC. We urge you to contact them directly for further information. They have been working diligently researching this issue for some months now. If you aren’t a member, you may wish to consider a membership – discuss this with them also.
